AREAS OF EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE:
Marriage & Couples Therapy: I have been Clinical Director at the Cork Marriage Counselling Centre since 1990 where i have functioned as a Clinical Supervisor, trainer, practitioner, and writer. I have therefore developed considerable expertise and competence in working with couples and families.
Child Counselling and Psychological Assessments Throughout my career I have worked with families and children. I began as a school counsellor in Chicago in the mid-eighties through to the present where I provide counselling and assessment for children and parents dealing with marital breakdown.
Family Therapy: I have extensive experience in working with families dealing with issues related to parenting, child psychology, family breakdown, domestic abuse and violence, etc.
Domestic Violence & Abuse: I was founder of the Cork Domestic Violence Project in 1992 and set up the first intervention group programme in Ireland for abusive and controlling men. A considerable amount of my work throughout my career has been focused on assessing and assisting people dealing with the effects of abuse and violence. I have also worked for a number of years with adult sex offenders and pedophiles having completed specialised training at the Gracewell Institute in Birmingham in 1994.
Professional Training and Supervision: I have been an approved supervisor with the Family Therapy association of Ireland for the past 20 years. I have facilitated up to 100 workshops and training events throughout my professional career.
Writing: I have written three books (see this website). I also write a weekly column for the Cork Evening Echo every week having completed over 500 such articles. I have published research articles on domestic violence, marital breakdown, and men’s issues.
Problems I do not treat: The following are areas I am very familiar with, but ones for which I do not provide specialist therapy. I do preliminary assessments of the following areas but seek to make appropriate referrals of clients who need specialised intervention.
I do not provide intellectual or educational assessments of children. I do not work directly with teenagers suffering from eating disorders. I do not provide treatment for people with very specific phobias. I tend to refer clients who may need long-term or in-depth therapy as adult survivors of child sexual abuse. I do not treat people for addiction but do assess people’s need for such treatment or intervention. I do not treat people suffering from major affective disorders or psychotic illnesses.
